Early and the Attack
Laxmi was born into a poor family in New Delhi. When Laxmi was 15 years old and an 11th-grade student in 2005, she was approached by a 32-year-old man working in her neighbourhood, Naeem Khan. He proposed to Laxmi, but she declined. She didn't tell anyone because her family would have blamed her and stopped her studies. Ten months later, at 10:45 a.m., Laxmi Agrawal was returning from Khan market when she received the same message from Naeem: he loves her and wants to marry her. She didn't say anything. Naeem and Kamran (Naeem's older brother) attacked her with acid in no time. While riding his motorcycle, Kamran called Laxmi's name from behind. When Laxmi turned around in response to her name, Naeem threw acid in her face from the backseat. Laxmi fainted and when she regained consciousness, she attempted to walk up and ask for help, but she was involved in multiple road accidents. Arun Singh called the police, but when he saw her skin melting from the acid, he realised it was too late to wait. Someone else splashed water on her face in an attempt to soothe the burns, causing the acid to move down and burn her neck. Arun then managed to get her into the back seat of his car. This resulted in burn holes in the seat covers. He had her admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. The police arrived at the hospital without delay. Arun then inquired about Laxmi's family and where she lived. He arrived at her house, informed her family, and drove them to the hospital. She had several operations, including eye surgery. Naeem Khan was arrested four days after the attack but released on bail a month later. He married off right away. Despite widespread protests and media attention, he was sentenced to life in prison.
